The Chinese Universities Consortium There are seven Chinese universities in the consortium at this stage. Each one of the Chinese universities in the consortium will contribute to the PCU in its own area of expertise and specialization, which is a strategy which promises the best chance of success in implementing the project. This strategy gives Pakistan direct access to areas of highly specialized engineering from universities which have gained great expertise in these fields over many years. The consortium formation has the major advantage that the PCU project work is distributed among several universities, each of which can undertake to commit resources for one or more specific areas of the PCU and a more focused and efficient allocation of resources can take place The universities in the Chinese consortium at present are: - Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, BUPT (Lead Coordinating University)
- Beihang University, BUAA
- University of Science and Technology Beijing, USTB
- Beijing Institute of Technology, BIT
- Tsinghua University
- North China Electric Power University, NCEPU
- Beijing Jiaotong University
Other universities may be added to the consortium as and when deemed necessary. BUPT is the lead coordinating university among the consortium of Chinese Universities and institutes collaborating with HEC for the establishment of UESTP-China or PCU. Brief descriptions of the member universities are given below: - Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) is one of the most prestigious of the Engineering and Architectural technical institutions in China. It is a research university which has close connections to international institutions, high-technology companies and the government. The University was established in 1955 and has distinguished itself by its excellent teaching and research in the field of information and telecommunication and is accordingly ranked number one in China in this field. The University has 14 Schools and a population of over 16,000 students, which includes 4,650 Masters and 805 Doctoral students. It has a total of 1,066 professors and researchers. Led by distinguished academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, it is one of the Key National Universities of China. It is about to launch its third Campus, providing another symbol of its standing, success and growth. One of the present two Campuses is operational in collaboration with Queen Mary College, University of London.
- Beihang University (BUAA) was formed in 1952 in a merger of the aeronautical departments of eight of the best universities in China. Today, with 17 Schools and a student population of 26,000 (of which 11,000 are graduate students) and a faculty of over 2,000 it is one of the best research-oriented universities in China. Its research budget has had a growth rate of over 20% per annum during recent years. It has strong links with industry, attracting half of its research projects from that sector, and also has collaborations with 139 universities, research institutes and companies from 28 countries. The School of Astronautics and Space Engineering at Beihang has the leadership role amongst Chinese universities. A centre for both higher education and scientific research, BUAA has become one of the important bases for quality education and scientific research in China.
- The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) founded in 1952, is a key national university under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of China. USTB is famous for its study of metallurgy and material science. While engineering is the focus, there are also programmes in basic science, management, humanities, economics and law. USTB is one of the 33 Universities in China that are entitled to establish state-approved graduate schools. USTB consists of 9 schools, provides 39 undergraduate programmes, 65 master programmes, 26 doctoral programmes and 7 postdoctoral research fields. USTB attaches great importance to the establishment and development of its academic disciplines. Scientific researches in USTB focus on the solution of major scientific and technology problems in the modernization of metallurgical and materials production, as well as the development of new technology. Many breakthroughs have been achieved in the areas of technological research and major technical problems have been solved for metallurgical and materials industries. From 1991 to 1993, USTB ranked sixth, fourth and fifteenth respectively among universities nationwide for winning the National Prizes for Natural Sciences, for Advancement in Science & Technology and the National Invention Prize.
- Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was formed in 1940. It is a National Key University with a strong research orientation and was one of the first universities to run a graduate school. It has 11 schools, a faculty of over 3,500, and a student population of over 37,000 with over 5,000 Masters students and over 2,000 Doctoral candidates. With three State Key Laboratories and four laboratories for State Key Disciplines it has always been ranked amongst the best of the technical universities in China.
- Tsinghua University was founded in 1911 as a Preparatory School for students to be sent to US universities for higher education. Today, with its 13 Schools and over 3,000 faculty members, it is ranked number one in China. The student strength is over 20,000 with 6,200 Master's degree candidates and over 2,000 Doctoral candidates. The Civil Engineering School, the Material Science Department and the Energy Department are amongst the best in the country.
- North China Electric Power University was founded in 1958. As one of the key universities in China with a history of more than 50 years, this university has been fostering talents in the areas of engineering technology, management, economics and the social sciences. There are more than 8500 students with over 600 graduate students and doctoral students. NCEPU possesses a high-quality teaching staff with a total number of 1,505 professional teachers, including 252 professors, 404 associate professors, and three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It has undertaken thousands of scientific research programmes, particularly those financed by the National Natural Science Funds, National Key Problem Projects, and international cooperative projects, of which nearly 100 projects have been recognized with national , provincial and ministerial awards.
- Beijing Jiaotong University, established in 1896 has about 14,000 full-time undergraduate students and 6,000 graduate students. Leading in communication and information engineering, economics and management, and traffic and transportation, BJTU offers 38 undergraduate programmes, 102 Master s’ programmes and 60 Ph.D. programmes. Altogether, the university has 22 research institutes and research centres, and 39 laboratories which include the transportation system simulation laboratory and transportation automation laboratory, which are the best of their kind in China.
In brief, the partner universities in China have all the experience and ingredients necessary to create a high-level University of Engineering, Science and Technology of Pakistan (UESTP) from the ground level up and to encourage the participation of Chinese industry in the project. If you graduate from PCU you will receive a degree with international standing which will serve as an accolade of the quality of your academic achievements. |
